Why Custom .
A few words from the world's most famous golfer in a 2006 Golf Channel interview
Kelly
Tilghman:
"What is the most important thing that amateurs need to know about
equipment these days?"
Tiger
Woods:
"Proper fitting. I think the ultimate key is to have the golf clubs fit
you, you not fit the club. I try and stress that to all the juniors and
even amateurs that I give clinics to, they ask me in Pro Ams, you got
to get a club that fits. You don't want a club that's (inaudible) you
like to play two degrees upright. It's not going to work. You are not
going to get the maximum advantages of that club. The club was not
designed to be hit that way. I think that's one of the advantages that
I think club fitting has certainly made leaps and bounds is that they
are able to fit people properly. I think that's where amateurs need to
take advantage of that opportunity. I think that will help their game
tremendously."
A complete professional fitting will consider 21 variables:
- Loft - to get the right trajectory and distance.
- Lie - crucial for accuracy, especially in the scoring clubs.
- Bulge - affects how controlable our off centre driver shots are.
- Roll - important for effective launch angle.
- Face Angle - can help tremendously with a slice or hook.
- Sole Angle - important to get right so we do not bury our wedges.
- Offset - helps with squaring the clubace at impact.
- Head design and material - get the right design for your particular needs.
- Shaft flex - we match the flex to your swing speed, tempo and release.
- Shaft torque - avoid a shaft that is too stiff or too loose.
- Shaft weight - get the weight right and it matches your natural tempo.
- Shaft spine alignment - we ensure the spine is aligned during assembly.
- Shaft bend profile - get the right profile to help with desired ball flight.
- Shaft material and design - graphite? steel? scandium? composite?
- Grip size - the only point of contact with the club, it has to feel just right.
- Grip weight - can affect the swingweight.
- Grip material - feel and performance.
- Club length - the most crucial factor for consistent on-centre hits.
- Club swingweight - a balanced set means one swing works for all clubs.
- Club weight - lighter for more distance, heavier for more control
- Set Makeup - a custom set can be tailored for you. Want to play 4 hybrids and start your irons at #7? Are you a beginner and just want the 5,7 9 and SW? Do you like the forged 3,4,5 in one line and the cast 6 to PW in another? All of these flexible makeups are possible with custom clubs.
